[personal profile] such_heights posting in [community profile] wiscon_vidparty
Hello, vidders! [personal profile] were_duck and [personal profile] skud asked me to host this discussion for anyone in the process of putting together a vid to submit as a premiere to their Wiscon vid party.

(Info about the party and premieres info post.)

The deadline is in a couple of weeks -- May 1st (with a late deadline of May 13th, do let them know if you’re planning to submit later). Fear not, if you’re still trying to get something together! There is still time.

This post can operate as an open thread when we can commiserate, seek out betas and get any technical or moral support required to make it to the end.

Here are some resources that might be useful, particularly for newer vidders:

I need a kick in the pants with regards to mine--once I get a flow, it'll be easy, but I'm at that OH GOD SO MUCH SOURCE MATERIAL stage.

Cheerleaders are so welcome.

I am happy to cheerlead, though I don't have much to offer on the technical front I do have an excess of enthusiasm and I would LOVE to see what you come up with! I'll PM you my main email address.

I have one I started ages ago that I realised would make a good Wiscon vid. It's an SF canon and it's kind of fluffily feminist if that makes sense. Nothing deep, but easy to make, which would be a good thing after "Vindication" which was a PITA. I've even got about 30 seconds of it done. But... it's stalled. Sigh. I just have to get off my butt and finish it. Ugh ugh ugh.

fluffily feminist is the best kind, I think. I hope you're un-stalled now. :D

SUMMARIES ARE SO HARD.

(I support this whole Wiscon premiere concept so very hard).

Dude. OK. Let me tell you about my VVC Club Vivid vid summary last year. It was my first ever VVC and I'd never submitted a vid before. So I get to their form where you put all the details, and it asks for a summary. So I paste in, like, a paragraph of stuff. Stuff which, as it happens, is a quotation from an 18th century proto-feminist opining on the subject of the general awesomeness of women, which is exactly what my vid is about! But, you know, it's fairly dense.

So months later, I get to VVC and look at the program and everyone else's vid summaries are, like, 3 words long. As someone else put it, a typical VVC vid summary is: "John Sheppard: does he?" So my summary sticks out like a great big overgrown tumor or something. It was ridiculous.

/o\

I realise that's not necessarily helpful, but I just wanted you to know that I share your pain.

Paaaaaaain, yes. Though even without having seen your summary at the con, I can say with certainty that 18th century proto-feminist opining on the general awesomeness of women is an AWESOME summary and worth all the words it took. (I just recently submitted to a con for the first time and included my usual vague song lyric as the summary, but then added the pairing and general scope of the vid and went D: when my summary was twice as long as anyone else's. If you have to put the pairing and season of the show in the summary, YOU HAVE FAILED AS A VIDDER. :D)

The funny thing is that as a viewer, I often appreciate fairly explicit summaries that give me a frame of reference for what the vidder is doing, especially if I'm only going to watch the vid once (like at a con!) Yet as a vidder, I tend towards the vaguely pretentious song lyric that probably says nothing to anyone who isn't me. Even now, the summaries Becka and I are kicking around are like, 10 words, and yet I'm like...but they are so wordy and on the nose. :) Oh vidding, never change.

I actually talked to [personal profile] absolutedestiny about it at VVC and he said when he got the submission he was all "oh dear, does she know what Club Vivid is?" because my summary made it look like such a serious, weighty, political vid. I guess not everyone sees the immediate link between Mary Wollstonecraft and Joan Jett ;)

Btw if you want to send us your premiere stuff with whatever summary you like, you can always change it later. Just email us.
